Tell a Story

Wouldn't you know it, only a few weeks in and I'm already lagging on the blog. Truth is I'm working on a piece about why you should embrace formulaic game mechanics, and it has to be perfect before I let anyone see it or the world will end , etc. In the meantime, I've got a random programming tip: Tell a story with your code. When you're working on shared code I actually don't recommend this. But if you're working alone, you can waste a lot of time grappling with those chunks of code you don't touch for months at a time - you know, the buried artifacts from your own past that you dust off and hold it up to the light and wonder whether you wrote them while blackout drunk. So when code starts getting gnarly, I try to figure out a way to make it about a character trying to accomplish a specific goal, and either succeeding or failing. It's a great memory aid. One class I just revisited this morning is supposed to update chunks of voxels using some weird

We are opening up the Kickstarter pledge manager to new customers.

Streaming

The problem with staying up until 3 in the morning is that you have a really hard time getting going when you wake up. But going I am. I have been too long from coding, and killed many filthy aliens. Now, I turn my attention to things of greater import: coding adult adventure/life-sim games. In the interests of doing something different (for me), I'm going to work on the Church Corruption path that won out in the poll (anyone who is surprised by this turn of events does not know the intarwebs) for a while, at least. So much to do...

Almost Got 'Em

Almost got this XCom stuff worked out of my system. Friggin' good-game-poison. Takes forever to cycle out of your body. I'll be back to streaming coding tomorrow and Thursday. If you're curious about what kind of game I'm currently obsessed with, I have been streaming it the last few days (unannounced here because it's not germaine to the game creation deal), so feel free to tune in.

Glaaaaaaaah, X-Com

Man, all I really want to do today is play X-Com. I'm going to be streaming the game for a couple of hours, then working on coding...then probably more X-Com. It's so good! Edit: My wife roped me in to apartment cleaning, but I'm streaming now. Want to at least finish futa balls in the next couple of hours.

X-Tremely X-Cellent Stream

So here's the deal. X-Com Enemy Unknown comes out tomorrow. I've been looking forward to that game since I learned about it at PAX East earlier this year, and although I've ignored just about everything about it, including gameplay videos, spoilers and screenshots, I know it's going to be awesome. It's going to be amazing. I'm going to have SO MUCH FUN playing it. And tomorrow is my normal streaming night. SO FUCK THAT. Instead, I'm streaming right now . Tomorrow I'll be streaming X-Com. Then Wednesday I'll stream some coding AND THEN SOME MORE X-COM! And then Thursday I'll code for the morning and probably do something with my wife in the afternoon. Any way, stream time. Let's do this (working on Futa balls because why not). Edit : Blergh, karma works against me. X-Com was released at midnight, and all my files were corrupted, so I have to redownload it. Whyyyyyyy. Anyway, I got about half of the futa balls stuff done, which isn't bad fo

Plans are just a bunch of things that don't happen

So I was going to stream yesterday. And then didn't when things kept getting in the way, like dishes and laundry and life. So it didn't happen. Then I was going to stream tonight, and instead remembered that my parents are moving this weekend and I still had a bunch of stuff in their house that I needed to pick up, including a free TV (awesome!) and a bunch of heavy boxes (not so awesome). So the last two days have been pretty shitty. I am trying to get back into the swing of things here, but today's pretty much a wash. Depending on how much homework I have (last time I looked it didn't seem like a lot), I might be streaming this weekend, but otherwise I'll be streaming on Monday for sure.

Stream Tonight

Going to work on some spelling errors and new stuff tonight...and also watch the presidential debate. So if you're not in the mood to listen to the debate, you may want to mute the stream.

FRONTIERS

Image
EDIT: The game has changed quite a bit since this ambitious start, so as  you read this keep in mind that I'm describing a product that doesn't exist any more.  When deadlines began to slip I ditched most of the tech I was working on and started over with an existing terrain engine. Alright. Today I'm  going to spill the beans about the game I'm working on. First, strap on your time travel helmets because it's time for a lengthy flashback. (Spoiler: the game's called FRONTIERS , and if you don't care about origin stories, skip the orange .) Still with me? Sweet. Way back in the early 2000s when I was still in college, I wanted to create a particle physics based game engine. I dubbed it the PPBGE. (Anyone who knows me will tell you, names are not my strong point.) I'll resist the temptation to get into the gory details, because there were only two bits that mattered. First, all geometry would be virtualized; world objects would be stored & manipulat

No Stream Tonight

As it turns out, I'm way behind on things that I really can't afford to be behind on ( like this game, amirite?! ), so I have to spend tonight catching up on stuff. And it will suck. That being said, I do want to stream tomorrow night, and then first thing Thursday and possibly late Friday. So I'm more delaying the work this week than actually avoiding it. Also, check out the poll on the side.
